The Memorial Club ‘Youth Section’ is the newest section of the club and has followed on from the historic changes to the club at the 2005 AGM. Prior to this date, under 18’s were only ever allowed in under the constant guardianship of an adult.
The section was the brainchild of long-term committee member Tony Crompton, who recalled the ‘bad old days’ when he himself - like all before him - could only access the club alone once he attained the age of 18. Tony went on, and continues, to be a good standard player but always had that ‘what if’ in the back of his mind. Once the AGM opened the doors to youth / lady members he set about creating a youth section and a new membership category.
The mantel of Youth Section ‘driver’ has now passed to Bob Spilsbury whose own son is a member of the resident ‘Bruce Tulley Snooker Academy’. The first Academy of it’s kind for 20 miles. Bruce is a top amateur player holding numerous league records and who has taken the basic structure provided by Tony and enhanced it with his own methodical, exacting and thought provoking style. The Academy is held each Monday evening at minimal cost to the youths.
Bob began a Youth Crown Green Bowling Academy where young and old of differing ability learn the rudiments of the game and put the lessons to good use in organised practices. This is now run by Tony & Barney Hammond.
